Episode 511: Rock N’ Runway

FILED UNDER: Challenges, Designers, Judges, Tim Gunn

Every week on Project Runway there is a twist and turn and last night’s episode was no exception! Similar to Episode 509:What’s Your Sign? The designer’s had to depend on each other to get through the challenge. This time by designing for each other and not together in a group challenge.

Can we just say were relieved when Tim picked the names and genres out of the hat as we didn’t want to see what would have happened had they been left to their own devices. As the names were called we had no doubt that Suede would be successful since he seems to have great rock sensibility just in his personal style. We were also pretty confident in Jerell’s ability to create a pop look. We were concerned however about Korto, Leanne, and Kenley all of whom seemed to be asked to step way outside of their box.

Once the sketching process began and ideas were being bounced around, our skepticism started to ease as far as Korto and Leanne were concerned ….as for Kenley that was another story.

While the other designers embraced the idea of their genre Kenley was stuck on her point of view as a designer. Any attribute of hip-hop that she didn’t like she didn’t incorporate in her design. This was not the point of the challenge. The challenge was for the designer to make an outfit that represented a particular genre and not necessarily create an outfit they would wear or a culture they are a part of. This is precisely what Tim was trying to tell Kenley when he came to give her a critique on her piece. Unlike the other designers Kenley vehemently disagreed with Tim to the point where he gave her swift tongue lashing ( well, ….a tongue lashing for Tim).

The judges including guest Judge Hip-Hop artist LL Cool J thought felt that Kenley’s look was not Hip-Hop and also commented that the pants to the outfit were badly made. Additionally, they liked the vest to Suede’s Rock look for Jerell but like Tim thought he could have taken it farther and really pushed the envelope. Leanne ’s look was not the worst but they did feel like she could have done something more polished for Korto’s  Country look she created.

Ultimately the judges loved both Jerell’s Pop look for Kenley and Korto’s Punk look for Suede and decided Korto was the winner. Suede, who had been playing it safe for weeks, was finally voted off.

Although, we know some fans disagreed we think this challenge was fun, fun, fun and we can’t wait to see what all the tears on next week’s episode are all about!!!

PS - Korto ROCKS!!!! That girl’s sewing is impecable - not to mention she is very creative and when she hooked up that drag queen Sweetie and made her dress fit so flattering, I said ‘You GO Korto!!!!! Not everyone can design and sew for men, and Korto’s design this week fit Suede like a glove!

I was totally surprised! Suede’s look was not astounding, but at least it somewhat reflected rock n roll (albeit modestly and safely), but Kenley completely missed the feel of hip hop and she essentially said “I don’t care what you think, this is what I think” to LL Cool J and the other judges? She is rude and annoying and I don’t think she deserves to win. I hope Korto, Jerell, and Leanne are in the top 3 and I think the competition between them will be great. I predict Jerell to be the winner, but I also predicted Santino and Michael (K?)Night. What the hell do I know?

I think that Suede was robbed! His outfit was sexy, interesting, and a lot better than Kenley’s. She is a little brat. I saw the preview of next week’s show, and she “smarts off” to Heidi. I think that it is good to be confident and strong, but she will not take criticism at all!

  7. TraLuv Says:

How is it that Kenley - with her one-dimensional, 1950’s costume design aesthetic, rude behavior, snide comments, and immaturity, who failed miserably in the hip hop challenge - IS STILL ON THE SHOW??? She’s no where near as talented as she thinks she is. She doesn’t take direction or guidance, nor does she listen to constructive criticism. Did the producers leave her on the show because they thought she’d be good for t.v.? Mediocre design and bad behavior should not be rewarded. Enough of her already.

I have loved this show since the first season. It’s good TV, but I don’t expect the contestents to be there for each other because, let’s face it…this is the world we live in and people are not there for each other. However, this season there is a contestent that I have been shocked by. Korto has been seen reading her bible on camera. Wow…a Christian on the show. But Kirto has been really nasty toward Kenley. As Christians we are to esteem others greater than ourselves. Korto refused to give Kenley advise about her hip-hop look and then in the evening gown challenge was glad that she lost a bag from Mood. As Christians we are to be known by our fruit. Come on Korto, where is your fruit???

korto is the best person for the money, i think she is the fighting the hardest she has never made anything ugly she has been complemented on every outfit that she has made korto should have won more runways than she has. by the way kenley should have been gone the first time she was rude and disrespectful to the judges no matter what her outfit looke like suede should still be there and not kenley.
